Car Immobiliser Information

What is a car Immobiliser?

A car immobiliser is a crucial security feature designed to prevent unauthorised access and theft of vehicles. Essentially, it’s an electronic device integrated into the vehicle’s engine system, creating a safeguard against anyone attempting to start the car without proper authorisation.

Operating through a transponder key or a fob containing a unique electronic code, the immobiliser communicates with the car’s engine control unit (ECU). When the key is inserted into the ignition, the immobiliser sends a signal to the ECU. If the transmitted code matches the pre-programmed code within the ECU, the engine is permitted to start. However, if an incorrect code or an unauthorised key is used, the immobiliser halts the fuel supply or ignition system, preventing the engine from starting.

This security measure significantly reduces the risk of vehicle theft, as even if a thief manages to bypass the ignition system or hotwire the car, the engine won’t start without the correct key or electronic code. Car immobilisers are an integral part of modern vehicle security systems and are often required by insurance companies to reduce the risk of theft.

In recent years, immobilisers have evolved to become more advanced, incorporating encrypted codes and additional security layers to enhance protection against theft. Their effectiveness in thwarting unauthorised access has made them a standard feature in many vehicles, contributing significantly to overall vehicle security and peace of mind for vehicle owners.

Our two recommended immobilisers are the Autowatch Ghost Immobiliser, which needs a “code” to be put into the vehicle before it will start. This uses the vehicles existing buttons in a specific sequence before the car will start.

The Pandora Storm has a “fob” which disarms the immobiliser automatically when it’s within the vacinity of the vehicle.
